    Towards a Sustainable Global World.Ilya V. Ilyin & Arcady D. Ursul - 2019 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 46 (3-4):224-235.
Despite the popularity of the term “global,” the making of a global world has been little studied to date and only a few works have been published. It is assumed that this kind of world has already partly crystallized thanks to globalization, but it is not expected to take a more coherent shape until later in the future. The purpose of the paper is to justify the opinion that a global world should be construed as a state of civilization and (...)

Stress‐induced cellular adaptive strategies: Ancient evolutionarily conserved programs as new anticancer therapeutic targets.Arcadi Cipponi & David M. Thomas - 2014 - Bioessays 36 (6):552-560.
Despite the remarkable achievements of novel targeted anti‐cancer drugs, most therapies only produce remission for a limited time, resistance to treatment, and relapse, often being the ultimate outcome. Drug resistance is due to highly efficient adaptive strategies utilized by cancer cells. Exogenous and endogenous stress stimuli are known to induce first‐line responses, capable of re‐establishing cellular homeostasis and determining cell fate decisions. Cancer cells may also mount second‐line adaptive strategies, such as the mutator response. Hypermutable subpopulations of cells may expand (...)

    Semantic games with chance moves.Arcady Blinov - 1994 - Synthese 99 (3):311 - 327.
In the presence of chance moves in a semantical game, the existence of pure optimal strategies does not guarantee the existence of winning ones. This fact provides a basis for constructing supervaluational semantical games with a chance move. Additional possibilities of using chance moves in game-theoretical semantics are also discussed.

An Incarnational Model of the Eucharist.James Arcadi - 2018 - Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
The Eucharist is at the heart of Christian worship and at the heart of the Eucharist are the curious phrases, 'This is my body' and 'This is my blood'. James M. Arcadi offers a constructive proposal for understanding Christ's presence in the Eucharist that draws on contemporary conceptual resources and is faithful to the history of interpretation. He locates his proposal along a spectrum of Eucharistic theories. Arcadi explores the motif of God's presence related to divine omnipresence and special presence (...)

Analytic Theology as Declarative Theology.James M. Arcadi - 2017 - TheoLogica: An International Journal for Philosophy of Religion and Philosophical Theology 1 (1):37-52.
Analytic theology seeks to utilize conceptual tools and resources from contemporary analytic philosophy for ends that are properly theological. As a theological methodology relatively new movement in the academic world, this novelty might render it illegitimate. However, I argue that there is much in the recent analytic theological literature that can find a methodological antecedent championed in the fourteenth century known as declarative theology. In distinction from deductive theology—which seeks to extend the conclusions of theology beyond the articles of faith—declarative (...)

  13. God is Where God Acts: Reconceiving Divine Omnipresence.James M. Arcadi - 2017 - Topoi 36 (4):631-639.
In classical theism, God is typically conceived of as having the attribute of omnipresence. However, this attribute often falls prey to two puzzles, the immateriality puzzle and the intensity puzzle. A recent explication of omnipresence by Hud Hudson falls short of solving these puzzles. By attending to key narratives in the Hebrew Scriptures, I argue that one ought to conceive of God’s presence at a location as God’s acting at that location. Thus, God’s omnipresence is God’s acting at all locations.

Recent Philosophical Work on the Doctrine of the Eucharist.James M. Arcadi - 2016 - Philosophy Compass 11 (7):402-412.
The doctrine of the Eucharist has been one of the more fruitful locales of philosophical reflection within Christian theology. The central philosophical question has been, ‘what is the state of affairs such that it is apt to say of a piece of bread, “This is the body of Christ”?’ In this article, I offer a delineation of various families of answers to this question as they have been proffered in the history of the church. These families are distinguished by how (...)

Love, Divine and Human: Contemporary Essays in Systematic and Philosophical Theology.James M. Arcadi, Oliver D. Crisp & Jordan Wessling (eds.) - 2019 - T&T Clark.
This volume offers an array of newly commissioned essays, addressing the topic of love in the Christian tradition. Drawn from a range of expert theologians and philosophers in contemporary analytic and non-analytic theology, these essays join current debates within the theology of love, and aim to propose new avenues for future research. Including the last essay written by Marilyn McCord Adams, Love, Divine and Human deals with a rich variety of issues related to divine and human love. The broad scope (...)

  19. Recent developments in analytic Christology.James M. Arcadi - 2018 - Philosophy Compass 13 (4):e12480.
The notion that Jesus Christ is one person with two natures has been the venue of much philosophical theological work in the past 40 years. One mode of engagement with this idea has been to defend the coherence of the idea. This has been done by, for example, revising standard conceptions of divinity and humanity or predicate attribution. Another mode of engagement with the doctrine is to offer models for how the state of affairs of the Incarnation might work. This (...)

    The T&T Clark Handbook of Analytic Theology.James Arcadi & James T. Turner (eds.) - 2021 - New York: T&T Clark/Bloomsbury.
The T&T Clark Handbook of Analytic Theology provides theological and philosophical resources that demonstrate analytic theology's unique contribution to the task of theology. Analytic theology is a recent movement at the nexus of theology, biblical studies, and philosophy that marshals resources from the analytic philosophical tradition for constructive theological work. Paying attention to the Christian tradition, the development of doctrine, and solid biblical studies, analytic theology prizes clarity, brevity, and logical rigour in its exposition of Christian teaching. Each contribution in (...)

    A Theory of Consecration: A Philosophical Exposition of A Biblical Phenomenon.James M. Arcadi - 2013 - Heythrop Journal 54 (6):913-925.
I employ William Alston’s account of speech act theory in order to analyze the concept of consecration. I describe consecrations as EXERCITIVE-type illocutionary acts, whereby objects are distinguished for God’s use. I test my reasoning and definition on the first instance of consecration in Scripture, the consecration of the Sabbath. This allows me to probe further the necessary and sufficient conditions for veridical consecrations. Finally, I describe that the speech act of consecration brings about an ownership relation between God and (...)

Is gestural communication more sophisticated than vocal communication in wild chimpanzees?Adam Clark Arcadi - 2003 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 26 (2):210-211.
The communicative behavior of chimpanzees has been cited in support of the hypothesis that language evolved from gesture. In this commentary, I compare gestural and vocal communication in wild chimpanzees. Because the use of gesture in wild chimpanzees is limited, whereas their vocal behavior is relatively complex, I argue that wild chimpanzee behavior fails to support the gestural origins hypothesis.

Analyzing Prayer: Theological and Philosophical Essays.Oliver Crisp, James M. Arcadi & Jordan Wessling (eds.) - 2022 - Oxford: Oxford University Press.
Analyzing Prayer draws together a range of theologians and philosophers to deal with different approaches to prayer as a Christian practice. The essays included deal with issues pertaining to petitionary prayer, prayer as reorientation of oneself in the presence of God, prayer by those who do not believe, liturgical prayer, mystical prayer, whether God prays, the interrelation between prayer and various forms of knowledge, theologizing as a form of prayer, lament and prayer, prayer and God's presence, and even prayer and (...)

These sixty contributions from researchers in ethology, ecology, cybernetics, artificial intelligence, robotics, and related fields delve into the behaviors and underlying mechanisms that allow animals and, potentially, robots to adapt and survive in uncertain environments. They focus in particular on simulation models in order to help characterize and compare various organizational principles or architectures capable of inducing adaptive behavior in real or artificial animals. Because the techno-economic paradigm of contemporary conceptualizations of innovation is often taken for granted in the literature, this chapter opens up this self-evident notion. First, the chapter consults the work of Joseph Schumpeter, who can be seen as the founding father of the current conceptualization of innovation as technological and commercial. Second, we open up the concept by reflecting on two aspects of Schumpeter’s conceptualization of innovation, namely its destructive and its constructive aspect, based on findings in the history of (...)
